Tony Awards 2013
The competetions are more hard than last years.
The closest race is in the Best Musical classy. There is the early ahead, "Kinky Boots," and "Matilda," a show has gained momentum since its thirteen nominations were announced April 30, 2013. "Matilda" received twelwe nominations overall, but its four main actresses in the lead role also weren’t eligible for Best Actress. Will Tony voters favor West End transfer "Matilda," which won seven Olivier Awards last year (London’s equivalent of the Tonys), including Best New Musical? Or will they reward "Kinky Boots," a feel-good show written by Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper, about acceptance of different lifestyles and being true to oneself?
Other categories are also tough to estimate. In the class for the Best Actor in a Play, Nathan Lane ("The Nance"), Tom Hanks ("Lucky Guy"), and Tracy Letts ("Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf?") are the strongest contenders, and any one of them could be named winner. But Hanks has the edge given strong reviews for his Broadway debut, and love for “Lucky Guy” playwright Nora Ephron.
The Best New Play category, as a result, is also up in the air. Will voters go with "Lucky Guy," about former New York columnist Mike McAlary, or cast their ballots for “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” an uproarious comedy by Christopher Durang? Richard Greenberg also impressed critics with “Assembled Parties.”
Nominees in the remaining acting categories are just as good (and the race particularly close for Best Leading Actress in a Musical). For sheer competitiveness alone, this is a strong Tonys year.
